Lower, Slower, Smaller & Smarter - Our age of tipping points

Abstract:

?With emergence and fast development of many new ideas, innovations, and technologies, we are surrounded by and exposed to unprecedented and often unbelievable progress. The humankind is literally facing numerous tipping points: longer life expectancy and aging population, tremendous abundance and extreme scarcity, affordable convenience and endangered environment, fast accumulation of wealth and disparity in living standard, interdependency between regions and nation-to-nation rivalry.

The higher learning institutions now have ever-important roles in local as well as global contexts. We are no longer in an ivory tower, mainly observing or commenting on societal development. We are fully engaged and expected to offer solutions along with talent development, knowledge transmission, discovery, and invention. It is also noteworthy that optimal solutions need to be based on new insight and sensible, holistic responses to grand challenges.

In this talk, examples including those drawn from the speaker’s own expertise, science and technologies of flight, are presented with a hope that our students, as society’s leaders of tomorrow, will embark on addressing these issues today.
